With only six days left to register, Connecticut’s health insurance exchange, Access Health CT, registered as many people as it did at this time last year.
Individuals wishing to have health insurance beginning January 1, 2023 must sign up for a plan by midnight December 15.
Registration is open until January 15, 2023, but plans purchased after December 15 will not start until February 1, 2023.
As of December 2, approximately 90,000 Connecticut residents have enrolled or auto-renewed on last year’s plans through exchanges. But the roughly 5,000 people who had canceled plans will need to take action to keep their coverage next year.
All three discontinued plans came with ConnectiCare benefits. Compass Gold Alternative POS, Passage Bronze Alternative POS and Choice Bronze Alternative POS.
The auto-renewal process for existing plans took place between November 17th and November 21st, but you still have time to purchase a new plan if you notice your premiums changing.
The insurance department has allowed insurers to raise rates by an average of 12.9% this year. At the same time, the amount of premium subsidies from the federal government has also increased, but these two things have different implications for planning.
Caroline Lee Ruwet, Marketing Director, Access Health CT, said:
She said about 84% of the exchange’s customers last year received federal premium assistance and 16% paid the full amount. These numbers are slightly higher this year, with 85% eligible for financial assistance and 15% paying their premiums in full.

Ruwet said it’s common for residents to procrastinate and wait until the last minute.
But this year, she said, “acquisition of new customers has increased by 25%.”
“We’re tracking exactly what happened last year,” she said.
She said people who have considered swapping in the past but didn’t register may want to consider their plans for this year, as they may be leaving money on the table.
“Really our mission is to reduce the number of uninsured people and reduce health disparities,” said Ruwett. “The real goal is to ensure that Connecticut residents have insurance.”
