Ije Akunyili made history as the first African-American woman to serve as Chief Medical Officer of Jersey City Medical Center.

She is the daughter of Dora Akuniri, the former director of the Nigerian National Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC).
Prior to his new election as chief medical officer, he was chief of emergency medicine at Waterbury Hospital, a Level II trauma teaching hospital, according to the press release.
She graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania and attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Akunyili then completed her emergency medical training at her McGovern Medical School in UTHealth Houston.

He also holds an MPA in International Development from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
She also won the 2019 Medical Director of the Year Award for her impressive turnaround in the Emergency Department at Waterbury Hospital.
Akunyili and her husband are parents of two teenage children.
