The 56-year-old Monterey Bay Dog Training Club member announced Monday that Mikayla Aguilar has been awarded the club’s 2023 UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Scholarship.
Aguilar plans to complete her PhD in Veterinary Medicine in 2025. The daughter of migrant farm workers, she spent the first part of her life in Salinas and attended Dr. Oscar F. Loya Elementary School before moving to Palmdale.
She graduated from Charter High School a year early to attend the Veterinary Assistance Program. From there she attended college in her local community and transferred to the University of California, Davis, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science. She has not yet decided whether to pursue a radiology residency or do research that could lead to her doctorate.
The Monterey Bay Dog Training Club Scholarship is awarded to eligible students who are past or current residents of Santa Cruz, Monterey, or San Benito County and who have demonstrated an interest in small animal medicine and surgery. This scholarship he established in 1975.
donation matched
As an ongoing storm hits our area, generous community members are donating to community foundation disaster funds, including a $75,000 match by a local family who wishes to remain anonymous.
“The disaster fund is ready and a reliable place for residents to help their neighbors affected by these storms. The fund will benefit those whose homes, businesses and lives have been upended. A donation to this fund is one of the many ways anyone can make a difference,” said Community Foundation CEO Susan True in a prepared release.
The Disaster Fund kicked into action after the New Year’s storms, supporting urgent needs and recovery efforts from storm- and flood-related damage in affected areas throughout Santa Cruz County. With ongoing storm warnings, countywide road closures, and ongoing evacuations for the current storm, the Community Foundation is helping nonprofits, small businesses, local governments, and those affected by the crisis respond. We are in close contact with small and medium-sized enterprises.
