NEW ORLEANS — One of the region’s largest healthcare providers partners with Xavier University to open a new medical school in Louisiana.
On Tuesday, Ochsner Health announced that it had agreed to join the school and establish a jointly managed medical college. Xavier’s officials first announced their intention to open his fifth medical school in Pelican State last April.
At the time, the university said the initiative would take several years to materialize and had begun discussions with local hospitals.
The latest development states that Ochsner and Xavier are HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges or Universities) and will form a non-profit corporation as part of the venture, “using the facilities, personnel and administrative processes of both institutions.” .
Officials said the aim was to address the medical needs of the region and increase representation of black medical professionals.
“Our partnership with Xavier furthers our Healthy State mission to increase diversity among health care providers, which translates into better care for our diverse communities locally and across the country. “Together, we must solve the challenges facing health workers and ensure that communities across the country have access to the highest quality care.”
No timeline was given for launching the new medical college.
