Dr. Robert Charles Marshall passed away peacefully at his home in Bakersfield in the early hours of January 6th. He was surrounded by his loved ones, his wife Shirley his Marshall, and the faithful hound Dieter.
Born January 3, 1940 in Taft, California. Bob grew up in Taft and went on to undergraduate studies at UCLA. Since childhood, he wanted to become a doctor, and he pursued that goal. He also continued his medical school at UCLA. He interned at Philadelphia General Hospital.
Bob captained the USAF in Raleigh for two years. After that, he spent a year as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the University of Colorado. Deciding that he likes women, “all day, not every day,” he changed his specialty to Head and Neck Surgery – Otolaryngology. In that field he works at UCLA Wadsworth VA Hospital. Deciding he could do more with Bakersfield, he moved to Bakersfield in 1973. From 1973 until he was in 2004 he had excellent practice in Bakersfield. He then closed his office and moved to Bakersfield.He became Vice President of Medical Relations at Memorial Hospital and retired in 2010.
Bob loved the mountains, hunting, fishing, hiking in Yosemite, soccer and Porsches. After his retirement, he moved to Sheridan, Wyoming in 2011 to fulfill his dream. Under pressure from his wife (his story), he returned to Bakersfield five winters ago.
Education is his priority and he has offered ongoing scholarships to UCLA Medical School, CSUB, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and TCU in Fort Worth.
Bob has served as President of the Kern County Medical Association, President of the Kern County American Cancer Society, Trustee of the Salvation Army, Trustee of the Road Runner Foundation, recipient of the CSUB President’s Medal, and Lifetime Trustee of the CSUB Foundation.
Bob was survived by his father, Robert Cray Marshall, and his mother, Opal Beatty Marshall.
Bob has three children and two sons-in-law: Robert Marshall (Leora), Kisten Ritzsinger (Todd), Megan Levin (David), Keith Miller, and Ivan Miller (Eleanora). Ten grandchildren: Kendall, Cameron and Tatum (Ritz Singer); Paris and Lily (Levine); Stella and Ethan (Marshall). Daniel, Katherine, Harlan Miller. 3 great-grandchildren: Peyton Moore. Ariane Johnson and Aislinn Storm Miller.
Bob is survived by three siblings, Dr. Richard Marshall (Shirley), Pam Davis (Don) and Suzanne Bradley (Samuel). Bob has many nieces and nephews whom he loves.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Brinton Museum in Bighorn, Wyoming in his honor.
A service will be held at Bakersfield National Cemetery at a later date.
