Knoxville, Tennessee (WVLT) – Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy has been charged with murdering her three children. Experts speculated that Clancy may have suffered from her postpartum psychosis.
“Postpartum depression is a depressive condition that usually begins after the baby is born,” says Dr. Michael Caucci, a postpartum psychiatrist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Postpartum psychosis is rare, but according to the CDC, 1 in 8 mothers suffer from postpartum depression.
New mothers often feel guilty or confused about their negative emotions after giving birth, so they rarely speak up.
“If it’s not that serious, she may be out of touch and hiding symptoms,” Dr. Caucci said. “She might have the insight, ‘Okay, this is weird, she doesn’t want to report it to anyone.’ Build, build.”
It’s important for new mothers to have a strong support system around them, especially during the first few months.
