The mental health of children and young people cannot wait any longer!

A report submitted to the Minister of Health, Families, Autonomy and Persons with Disabilities proposes 10 urgent measures for early intervention in mental health among young people. This involves identifying the first signs of fragility earlier, intervening before the rupture, equipping professionals in the field and accelerating access to care and recovery by reducing delays and obstacles.

On February 12, the report devoted to identification and early intervention in mental health among young people was submitted to the Minister of Health, Families, Autonomy and Persons with Disabilities, Stephanie Rist. A decisive step in developing prevention and support approaches.

This report drawn up by Professor Rachel Bocher, Professor Marie-Odile Krebs and Madame Angèle Malâtre-Lansac, after hearing 100 people, proposes 10 emergency measures for identification and early intervention which should allow the ministry to “move from observation to action”. The rapporteurs point out that “Early intervention in adolescent and young adult psychiatry does not currently constitute a structured area of health policy in France. It is based neither on a stabilized national definition, nor on an identified organizational framework, nor on management tools allowing a homogeneous reading of the offer and its results.

These measures are as follows:

– Establish a territorial-scale map of resources and partners involved in the identification and care of young people
– Rethink the connection between identification, orientation and care
– Structuring national monitoring of identification and early intervention with a national resource center
– Network the territory with early intervention systems
– Train all stakeholders in new care practices adapted to early intervention
– Promote change in practices at the territorial level
– Develop new health technologies for identification and early intervention
– Ensure sustainable and multi-annual funding
– Support research programs on early intervention and prevention in mental health of adolescents and young adults
– Strengthen co-construction with users and their loved ones.

The report recalls that: “Early intervention is not a simple question of “quicker diagnosis”, it is a real transformation of practices, where care must be initiated before a crisis situation or a formal diagnosis when the disorders impact functioning and require the use of specialized resources.”

For Stéphanie Rist the objectives are therefore clear: “less wandering, less recourse to emergencies, more active prevention and adapted support”.

The ministry reports that “ Discussions continue with all players in the ecosystem in order to transform these recommendations into concrete decisions.”
