Bipolar disorders: research advances 2026

The FondaMental Foundation unveils, in a digital book, the latest advances by its researchers on bipolar disorders. This summary highlights in particular that research in 2026 is moving towards precision psychiatry whose objective is to transform care by offering personalized rather than standardized treatments.

Published by the FondaMental Foundation, this digital book presents a summary of the latest scientific advances and innovations concerning bipolar disorders. Accessible free of charge online, it aims to help patients and their loved ones better understand bipolar disorder while providing health professionals with a clear overview of current knowledge. It also constitutes an awareness tool for the general public and helps to combat the stigmatization of bipolar disorders.

Towards precision psychiatry

This summary highlights in particular that research in 2026 is moving towards precision psychiatry, which aims to compensate for the diagnostic delay (still 8 to 15 years) and the heterogeneity of bipolar disorders. Thanks to the study of large cohorts like FACE-BD (1), researchers are now identifying precise biomarkers, whether genetic, inflammatory or from brain imaging. These discoveries provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of the disease, notably the role of chronic inflammation in 40% of patients and the neuronal connection abnormalities responsible for emotional instability.

The final objective is to transform care by offering personalized rather than standardized treatments, including innovations such as immunopsychiatry (2) and digital remote monitoring tools. By integrating biological, environmental and lifestyle dimensions, this approach seeks not only to stabilize mood, but also to prevent premature cellular aging observed in certain patients. This change in psychiatry promises to significantly improve the quality of life and reduce the major socio-economic impact of this pathology in France.

1– According to the FondaMental Foundation, FACE-BD (Foci of Consulting and Expertise Actions for Bipolar Disorders) is a national network of specialized Centers of Expertise, but it is also and above all one of the largest research databases in the world on this pathology.

2– L’immunopsychiatrie is an emerging medical discipline (particularly highlighted in the work of the FondaMental Foundation) which studies the close links between immune system and the mental disorders. It is based on the idea that mental health is not “all in the head”, but is deeply linked to the biological and inflammatory state of the entire body.
