Child psychiatry: two priority directions in 2026

The General Directorate of Care Supply presents the orientations of the call for projects in support of child psychiatry: decreasing 2026 budgets (10 M€ compared to 25 M€ in 2025) will primarily finance’early intervention for emerging psychoses and’offer for vulnerable groups, in particular children entrusted to child welfare (ASE), and those covered by a measure emanating from the judicial protection of young people (PJJ).

In an instruction published on July 6, 2026, the General Directorate of Care Supply (DGOS) specifies the modalities of implementation by the Regional Health Agencies (ARS) of a strengthening of the offer of perinatal psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry, to be implemented in the territories.

Two priority themes

The call for projects supports projects developed as part of a territorial consultation relating to the mental health issues of children and adolescents, whether it is already formalized within the “child-adolescent” axes of territorial mental health projects (PTSM) or initiated specifically for this purpose.

Priority attention will be paid to the following themes:

  • The response to vulnerable groups, in particular children entrusted to child welfare (ASE), and those covered by a measure emanating from the judicial protection of young people (PJJ). This will involve proposing responses adapted to the health problems of these children or adolescents. “by promoting innovative and partnership responses between the departmental services of the ASE, the PJJ and those involved in the child and adolescent psychiatry offer”, underlines the DGOS (for example, mobile teams, mixed reception offers). Projects involving cooperation with other players in the fields of education, addictions, prevention, or health and medico-social sectors are thus encouraged.
  • Identification and early intervention of emerging psychoses. The DGOS recalls that as part of the Neuder Plan to support psychiatry presented in June 2025, a measure aimed to structure, by 2027, a national model for the identification and early intervention of emerging psychoses throughout the country. This involves consolidating and continuing the territorial networking work already carried out.

The ARS are responsible for relaying instruction to health establishments authorized in psychiatry. Given the drop in funding allocated in 2026, the project selection process is left to their discretion, the ARS can thus choose to organize a jury as in previous years or not, according to the instruction relating to the methods of strengthening the offer in perinatal psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry for the year 2026.
