In this episode I’m joined again by Dr Federica Amati, Head Nutritionist at ZOE and one of the clearest voices I know on how food shapes our health across a lifetime. This time we focus on fertility, preconception health, and nutrition through pregnancy, the opening chapters of what researchers call the first 1,000 days, the window that shapes lifelong health. Federica makes the case that this early period, starting well before conception, is one of the most powerful and least discussed levers we have over our long-term health.
What I appreciated about this conversation is how Federica holds two things at once. The science here is genuinely remarkable. Your eggs began forming while your mother was still developing inside your grandmother, and most of the cell differentiation that builds an adult human is complete by the day of birth. But she is careful not to turn that into a source of guilt or fear. The goal is not blame, it is information we can act on, paired with an honest acknowledgement that much of what shapes these outcomes sits with policy and environment rather than with individual parents. It is a refreshingly nuanced take on a topic that often gets either sensationalised or avoided altogether.
What we cover:
- Why the first 1,000 days may be the longevity lever almost no one talks about, and what natural experiments like the Dutch Hunger Winter and a long-running study in The Gambia actually reveal
- How a father’s metabolic health is linked to his child’s brain and neurodevelopment, while a mother’s tracks more closely to her child’s metabolism
- The 90-day window before conception, and the specific steps both partners can take during it
- Whether the widely cited decline in sperm counts is something individuals should worry about, or a population signal we are over-extrapolating
- What GLP-1 medications mean for fertility, why you are advised to stop them around three months before trying to conceive, and the contraception detail too few people are told
- Why protein powders are not recommended in pregnancy, how much protein you actually need, and the truth about eggs and soy
- Practical ways to manage first-trimester nausea, and how to choose a prenatal supplement without falling for the idea that more is more
This is a conversation I wish I’d had access to years ago. Whether you are planning a pregnancy, supporting a partner through one, or simply curious about how much of our health is shaped before we take our first breath, I think you’ll take a lot from Federica’s clarity and care.
