“Stop! T’esrelou.e”: a prevention kit against gender-based and sexual violence in hospitals

A program inspired by a tool used in festivals to combat gender-based and sexual violence (Vias) is currently being tested in care units at CH Le Vinatier. Cards carrying a clear message can be given to the person who adopts inappropriate behavior. Objective: to facilitate dialogue and serve as a basis for prevention and education at Vias.

The Sexotopia psychoeducational program is designed to improve the quality of life of psychiatric patients by promoting a better understanding of their emotional, intimate and sexual lives. The caregivers behind this program recently discovered a tool to combat gender-based and sexual violence (SGBV) used during festivals: T’esrelou.e. Concretely, these are 7 cards illustrating inappropriate behavior in the context of emotional and sexual intimate life (VIAS): 5 “Anti relou.e” cards and 2 “Love” cards (see below). Questions then emerge: could this support facilitate dialogue in care units and thus constitute a lever for prevention and education at VIAS? We decide to test T’esrelou.e for users and the cards are then made available to them in the units. People are taking advantage of it, for example:

-Caroline followed at the day hospital, is regularly the victim of sexist comments from another user, whom she does not dare to approach. She chooses the “It’s sexist” card and gives it to him, thereby disengaging from any discussion.

-Arthur witnesses the harassment suffered by Caroline, he then decides to choose the “I support you” card and give it to her, so that she does not stay alone and speaks to a professional.

The principle is that the person who has received a card contacts a professional, an unscheduled interview is then offered.

Four test units were therefore chosen: 1 Entry Unit, 1 Rehabilitation Center, 1 Day Hospital, 1 Difficult Sick Unit.

Creation of a collective Intimate emotional and sexual life »

The decision to deploy the system throughout the hospital will then be taken at the level of the Care Directorate (Validation with adjustments? Invalidation of the project?). At the same time, a VIAS collective was created, bringing together health professionals trained or interested in sexual health, who may or may not have initiated VIAS support for users. The ultimate objective is to identify VIAS activity in the hospital and to create a transversal sexual health unit to respond to all the specificities of the people welcomed.
