Suicide attempts: the alarming increase continues among young girls

The latest data from the department of research, studies, evaluation and statistics (Drees) reveal an alarming increase in hospitalizations for suicide attempts, particularly affecting adolescent girls and young women. This statistical report highlights the urgency of strengthening prevention policies aimed at this population. Communiqué.

This dataset, accompanied by a data visualization, sheds light on hospitalizations linked to a self-inflicted gesture: that is to say a suicide attempt or non-suicidal self-mutilation (scarification, burns, blows against a wall, etc.). Data are presented by age, sex, rate or numbers and types of hospitalization (somatic or psychiatric) over the period 2012-2025.

Increase in the number and rate of patients hospitalized for suicide attempts or self-harm between 2024 and 2025

In somatic care services1, just over 84,000 people aged 10 or over were hospitalized at least once in 2025 for a self-inflicted gesture, 64% of them are women, a stable male/female ratio since 2021. Relative to the population, this corresponds to a rate of 170 per 100,000 women and 101 per 100 000 men. These rates increased by 2% in 2025 compared to 2024. The average rates for 2024-2025 increased by +4% for men and +9% for women compared to the average for 2021-2023. That of women is approaching the maximum level of 2012, the year from which it fell until 2020 before suddenly rising again. For men, the 2021-2025 rates remain lower than those for 2012-2019.

The increase in the rate of hospitalized patients aged 10 to 19, very strong between 2020 and 2021 (+56%), then between 2023 and 2024 (+16%), continues to a lesser extent between 2024 and 2025 (+4%).

The increase in rates of patients aged under 30 continues in 2025

These overall developments mask very contrasting trends depending on age and gender: the increase in the total number of hospitalizations is largely attributable to young girls (10-19 years old) and young women under 30 years old. The increase in the rate of hospitalized patients aged 10 to 19, very strong between 2020 and 2021 (+56%), then between 2023 and 2024 (+16%), continues to a lesser extent between 2024 and 2025 (+4%). Reaching 482 per 100,000 in 2025, this rate is the highest of all age groups and sexes and has almost doubled compared to the average for the years 2012-2019. This echoes publications on the deterioration of mental health within this population since the mid-2010s, accentuated by the health crisis of 2020.

While deaths by suicide are more numerous among men than among women, self-inflicted acts are less common among men. However, they increase among those under 30. For the second year in a row, the rate of male patients increased by more than 10% among those aged 10 to 19 and by more than 5% among those aged 20-29. In the population aged 30-59, the continuous declines observed among men and women between 2012 and 2022 are declining to reach a floor of 117 per 100,000 for men and 129 for women. Among patients aged 60 or over, the female rate continues its downward trend (72 per 100,000, -3% compared to 2024) and remains stable among men (59 per 100,000).
