Science Spotlight | New Consensus Statement Highlights Care for Adolescent Athletes
New ACSM Team Physician Consensus Conference Statement Published

In February 2026, the American College of Sports Medicine Team Physician Consensus Conference (TPCC) produced a new statement, “The Adolescent Athlete and the Team Physician: A Consensus Statement. 2025 Update” in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (MSSE) and the Current Sports Medicine Reports (CSMR) journals.

This latest TPCC consensus statement aims to help the team physicians improve the care of adolescent athletes by understanding the medical and musculoskeletal factors common in this age group. This statement provides an overview of selected medical issues that are important to team physicians who are responsible for the care and treatment of athletes. It is not intended as a standard of care and should not be interpreted as such.

This statement was developed by a collaboration of six major professional associations concerned about clinical sports medicine issues, in a project-based alliance to best serve active people and athletes. The organizations are: American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine.

The development of the statement was led by the ACSM Executive Committee representatives Stanley A. Herring, M.D., FACSM, Lance LeClere, M.D., and Margot Putukian, M.D., FACSM, who organized and gathered the distinguished panel of team physicians for the Team Physician Consensus Conference. The additional panel experts for the 2025 update include: Holly J. Benjamin M.D., Craig H. Bennett M.D., Lori Boyajian-O’Neill D.O., Shelley Street Callender M.D., Molly Day M.D., Robert Franks D.O., Jonathan T. Finnoff D.O., Neeru Jayanthi M.D., Scott A. Magnes M.D., Jason Matuszak M.D., Ryan Roach M.D., and Siobhan M. Statuta M.D..

The statement which published online in February 2026 is freely available now in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal here and the Current Sports Medicine Reports journal here.  Access to the previous TPCC statements are also free and available here.

ACSM From Around the Field Science Webinar Series Open to Students

ACSM’s From Around the Field Science webinar series is designed to provide ACSM students and members with an opportunity to learn about the diverse science our members conduct. Join us for informal discussions with our ACSM members to hear more about what they study, the general research methodology they use, and some of the interesting results their research is generating. In February, Dr. Laura Lewis, Director from the U.S Anti-doping Agency (USADA) will present “Blood Doping in Sport”. Dr. Lewis will provide an overview of the recently updated ACSM Consensus Statement on Blood Doping in Sport. This will include a brief history of blood doping in sport, an explanation of the currently prohibited substances and practices that constitute blood doping, including their effects of health and performance, as well as the current and emerging methods for detection. The webinar aims to provide a broad understanding of blood doping in sport and the current efforts to maintain a fair and level playing field for athletes. Join us on February 19th from 12:00 – 1 p.m. ET for this interesting discussion. This event is FREE for ACSM members. Register at: Blood Doping in Sport | American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
